I’ve had two HDV cameras give up the ghost… a Sony HDR-HC9 and a Cannon Vixia HV30. Actually, I can still use the Sony as a deck, but the CMOS is screwed up so it gives off a ghostly double-image of everything. The HV30’s carriage hates every cassette put into it, but I’ll give it credit… it was a few years old when I bought it and I gave it some hell.
My new camera is a Cannon Vixia HF M40, flash memory based (something I’ve been weary about, but starting to find pretty handy). 16 gigs internal memory, plus I doubled that with two mini SD cards… thing can record for 4 1/2 hours. Awaiting a baby death-lens and some extended life batteries from Amazon as I write this… it’s going to look ridiculous. I’ll post photos as soon as the gear comes in.
Anyway, this is a compilation of test footage under different settings, as well as recovered footage from the dead and dying HDV cams currently holding down paper at my fort’s office.
